Mopani Wood is an aquarium-safe African hardwood commonly used for aquascaping and terrariums! It’s a popular choice since it requires little preparation due to its very dense composition. Unlike other aquarium driftwoods, Mopani sinks quick and easy, requiring minimal downtime for waterlogging. It is also very resistant to rot, even in humid terrarium conditions, and is one of the longest lasting woods available. The wood itself features a mixture of brown hues and plenty of character in the form of gnarled texture and whorls throughout that offer interest and solid spots for attaching aquarium mosses, or rhizome plants.
Be aware that Mopani Wood will release a fair amount of tannins. If tea-colored aquarium water isn’t your..cup of tea, the effect can be reduced with consistent water changes. Alternatively, you can also presoak your Mopani in a bucket to release some prior to use. We will always note that tannins are not dangerous for your aquatic pets and more often than not, actually supports good health for a lot of tropical fish and other livestock. Mopani can work well alone or stacked on top of your favorite aquascaping stones for a nature-style planted aquarium!
