Remarks: Ghost shrimp is a common name used for a variety of shrimp commonly used as feeders for aquarium fish. This particular species also goes by the name of the eastern grass shrimp and is native to the southeastern United States. In the wild, they can be found in a multitude of different environments but prefer, calm, detritus rich pools. These shrimp can be difficult to breed outside of a natural pond setting as they only live on average for one year and have a larval stage that can be difficult to care for due to their extremely tiny size and feeding habits.
Ghost shrimp are best kept alone due to the fact any fish or invertebrate too small to eat them will be harassed by the ghost shrimp as it tries to hunt them at night. Any fish or invertebrate too big for the shrimp to eat will, in turn, eat the shrimp. Surprisingly, there have even been reports of ghost shrimp latching onto larger fish to attack by going for their eyes. This is why these shrimp are of best use in the hobby as a feeder unless one plans to keep a tank with just ghost shrimp.
Please note that when ordering ghost shrimp, you will receive a variety of sizes anywhere from juveniles to adults.
